Laying the Digital Foundations for Safer Cities: A Look Back at the Co-City Pilot with eThekwini Municipality and Microsoft

We had the privilege of working alongside eThekwini Municipality’s Safer Cities Unit and Microsoft to pilot a forward-thinking smart city initiative: the Co-City Mobile Solution. This was more than a technology project—it was a strategic move aligned with the Municipality’s bold vision of becoming Africa’s most caring and liveable city by 2030.

As featured by Microsoft (read the full story here), the Co-City pilot explored how mobile and web-based platforms could reshape the delivery of safety services and deepen citizen engagement.

At its core, the Co-City Solution was designed to:

  • Enable bi-directional communication between citizens and municipal services.
  • Enhance access to safety and emergency services.
  • Encourage citizen participation in democratic processes.
  • Drive administrative efficiencies through digital tools and data analytics.

The pilot served as a key stepping stone in demonstrating how municipalities can leverage government solutions to:

  • Improve safety outcomes,
  • Increase transparency,
  • And deliver more responsive, cost-effective services.

Now, as we continue to evolve the Co-City Platform, the lessons and momentum from that pilot remain foundational. It proved what’s possible when government, technology, and community come together to innovate for impact.

We’re excited about what’s next — and grateful to have been part of this transformative chapter in the smart city journey.
